A combination of cream and light therapy for superficial skin damage.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) combines advanced light technology with a specially formulated cream to gently address superficial skin concerns.
This non-invasive treatment is designed to enhance your skin’s health and appearance, making it an ideal option for issues such as sun damage, acne, rosacea, pigmentation, and signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores. It also supports skin recovery, aiding wound healing after skin procedures.
At Skin Clinic Taranaki, we tailor PDT treatments to suit your unique needs, utilising different light wavelengths to maximize the benefits for your specific skin concerns. For optimal results, multiple sessions may be recommended as part of your personalised care plan.
What happens during a PDT treatment?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) combines the application of a light-sensitive cream with the activation of targeted red or blue light to effectively treat abnormal skin cells. The treatment involves two appointments:
- Morning session: Application of the light-sensitive cream to the targeted area.
- Afternoon session: Light therapy to activate the cream and treat the affected skin.
Only the skin exposed to both the cream and light will be affected, ensuring a precise and controlled process. Redness following treatment is common and completely normal, typically resolving as the skin heals.
Key advantages of PDT
- No long-term side effects when used correctly
- Minimally invasive compared to surgery
- A quick treatment process
- Highly targeted and also suitable for larger areas, such as the scalp or back
- Minimal to no scarring once the site has healed.
Studies show that PDT can be as effective as surgery for treating certain cancers and pre-cancers, offering a versatile and patient-friendly approach.
