Photodynamic therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that involves light-sensitive medicine and a light source to destroy abnormal cells.

A combination of cream and light therapy for superficial skin damage.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is non-invasive process used to treat a range of skin concerns such as pre-cancerous skin lesions, sun damage, acne, rosacea, large pores, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation. It can also be used to aid wound healing after skin surgery.

We tailor treatments to your individual needs, with different colour lights used to maximise benefits for individual skin concerns. More than one treatment may be needed for best results.

What happens during a PDT treatment?

We apply a light-sensitive cream to the area of skin being treated then apply a red or blue light to activate the cream and destroy the abnormal skin cells. You will need two appointments, one in the morning for the cream application and one in the afternoon for the light therapy. Only the area of skin exposed to both the light-sensitive cream and the light will be affected by the treatment.

Some redness will occur following treatment however this is completely normal and will clear.

Studies have shown that PDT can work as well as surgery in treating certain kinds of cancers and pre-cancers. Advantages include:

  • No long-term side effects when used properly
  • Less invasive than surgery.
  • A quick process
  • It can be targeted very precisely, or used for larger areas, i.e. tops of heads and backs.
  • Usually minimal, or no scarring after the site heals.
